Celebrated Dogri poet and lyricist late Padam Dev Singh Nirdosh, is still remembered by majority of the contemporary people who once had been associated with him and remember his
exemplary work in Dogri particularly the Dogri
poems and couplets.
Nirdosh was born on 13th April 1940 in Royal
Kaleeth fort of Akhnoor Tehsil. Nirdosh was a
versatile writer who added new dimensions to the Dogri literature and is admired by one and all.
Though his lyrics and writings in Dogri had won hearts of the people but his lyric “Ballen-Ballen
Bag Haan Chanah Deya Paniya” is very popular
among rural masses till today along with many
other poems.
Many still recall that the demise of Padam Dev
Singh “Nirdosh” has created a void within the contemporary Dogri Literary scene as he was one of the most popular poets whose contribution in adding new dimensions to the genre of creating an unusual feeling of nostalgia. His songs, like
“Ballen Ballen Bag Haan, Chanah Deya Paniya”,
“Tunde Garan De Lok“, “Ikke Bari Gallan Nei Sanande Sariyan” and others had become a
household theme in Akhnoor where he lived and breathed his last.
Unlike another Dogri literature luminary Ved Pal “Deep’, Nirdosh moulded the genre of ghazal in his inimitable and indigenous style setting it appropriately in rustic environment of thecountryside, girdled by the Chenab. Lately, he showed his inclination towards composing lengthy poems, one of which “Basta” became
instantly popular.
Sahitya Akademi New Delhi included him in its
literature series’ & published his biography.
Among other prominent personalities whose life
sketch has been published by the Akademii under
this series included none other literary gems like
Nobel laureate Rabinder Nath Tagore, Munshi Prem Chand, Haribansh Rai Bacchan, Dinu Bhai
Pant, Ved Pal Deep and this is the greatest tribute
to him.
Nirdosh’s passing away is irreparable loss to
cultural life and Dogri literary movement in India, with his name still being remembered in every house in Akhnoor because of his generous nature
and various Samaritan virtues.
A retired army man, he kept himself busy in
rendering help, without any reward from people
who usually came to him with their day to day problems and grievances.
Dogri Sahitya Sabha should arrange
publication of his yet unpublished poetry now.
Nirdosh is the only poet in state whose statue
has been unveiled at a square called Nirdosh
Chowk, Akhnoor as a tribute by the State
Government.
It is pertinent to mention that Padam Dev Singh Nirdosh died on September 7, 1994, due to throat cancer. His only collection published
during lifetime is titled as ‘Khalaar Sochen Da’.
The literary personalities are the treasures of
the society and more you know about them
more you achieve out of their creativity.
A person cannot be a good writer or poet if he is not a noble soul and good at heart, and
Nirdosh possessed all these qualities.
